Which Beat Generation writer wrote the poem collection Howl and Other Poems?
Answer
Allen Ginsberg
Answer
Allen Ginsberg
Allen Ginsberg wrote the poetry collection Howl and Other Poems.
City Lights Books published the collection in 1956 as number four in its Pocket Poets Series. Its central poem, “Howl,” had been publicly performed by Ginsberg at San Francisco’s Six Gallery in 1955.
The poem’s candid treatment of sexuality, mental illness, drug use, and social conformity led to an obscenity trial against publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The court ruled in 1957 that the book had redeeming social importance, allowing it to remain available.
Howl is often linked with the Beat Generation alongside Kerouac’s prose and Burroughs’s experimental fiction. Ginsberg’s long lines and open, incantatory voice became especially influential in later American poetry and countercultural writing.
