Which Bauhaus artist painted Senecio in 1922?

The story behind the answer

Which Bauhaus artist painted Senecio in 1922? Paul Klee painted it.

Senecio, also known as Head of a Man Going Senile, is a 1922 oil painting by Swiss-born artist Paul Klee. It presents a human face as a near-circular mask divided into geometric blocks of orange, pink, yellow, and white. A raised eyebrow and curved line create a face that feels both playful and strangely enigmatic.

The title refers to Senecio, a Roman name associated with the performer and satirist Juvenal, and may also evoke the plant genus whose name means “old man.” Klee's simplified head demonstrates his interest in treating line, color, and shape as active visual forces rather than simply copying physical appearance.

Klee joined the Bauhaus faculty in Weimar in 1921 and taught there during the period when Senecio was made. That context helps explain the painting's structured geometry, although Klee's style also drew on Cubism, Expressionism, and his own theories of color and visual movement. The work is preserved at the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland.
