Which battle is considered Napoleon’s greatest victory?
Answer
Battle of Austerlitz
Answer
Battle of Austerlitz
The battle considered Napoleon’s greatest victory was the Battle of Austerlitz. Fought on 2 December 1805, it pitted Napoleon’s French Grande Armée against the combined Austrian and Russian armies during the War of the Third Coalition.
Napoleon deliberately appeared vulnerable, abandoning the strategically important Pratzen Heights and weakening his right flank. The Allies took the bait and overextended their forces. French troops then seized the heights, split the Allied army, and routed it. The battle became known as the “Battle of the Three Emperors,” although the Austrian emperor was not personally present on the field.
Austerlitz was more than a battlefield victory. The Treaty of Pressburg forced Austria out of the war, strengthened French influence in central Europe, and helped lead to the creation of the Confederation of the Rhine. It is often compared with Cannae and Gaugamela as a masterpiece of military planning.
Marengo was also a major French victory, while Waterloo was Napoleon’s final defeat. Borodino was exceptionally bloody but did not produce such a decisive strategic result.
