Which battle in 31 BCE gave Octavian victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Actium in 31 BCE gave Octavian victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra.

The naval battle took place near Actium on the western coast of Greece. Octavian’s fleet, commanded by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, defeated the forces of Antony and Cleopatra, who ruled Egypt together. Antony and Cleopatra escaped to Egypt, but Octavian followed them the next year.

Their defeat ended the final major civil war of the Roman Republic. In 30 BCE, Antony and Cleopatra died in Alexandria, and Egypt became a Roman province under Octavian’s control.

Actium was more than a naval engagement: it settled the question of who would dominate the Roman world. Octavian later became Augustus and presented the victory as the restoration of peace. The battle therefore stands at the transition between republican civil conflict and imperial rule.
