Which battle in 1471 saw the death of the Earl of Warwick, known as the Kingmaker?
Answer
Battle of Barnet
Answer
Battle of Barnet
The Battle of Barnet saw the death of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, known as the Kingmaker, on 14 April 1471. The Yorkist victory destroyed one of the most powerful political forces in the Wars of the Roses.
Warwick had helped place Edward IV on the throne, but the two men later fell out over foreign policy, royal appointments and Edward's secret marriage to Elizabeth Woodville. Warwick switched sides, allied with the Lancastrians and briefly restored Henry VI. Edward returned from exile with Burgundian support, forcing the two armies to meet near Barnet in Hertfordshire.
Fog caused serious confusion during the fighting, and some Lancastrian troops mistakenly attacked their own allies. As the army collapsed, Warwick tried to escape but was struck from his horse and killed. His death was followed weeks later by the Lancastrian defeat at Tewkesbury, leaving Edward IV in control of England.
