Which battle in 1471 saw the death of Edward, Prince of Wales, son of Henry VI?
Answer
Battle of Tewkesbury
Answer
Battle of Tewkesbury
The Battle of Tewkesbury saw the death of Edward, Prince of Wales, son of Henry VI, on 4 May 1471. It was a decisive Yorkist victory in the Wars of the Roses.
Edward of Westminster was the only child of the Lancastrian king Henry VI and Queen Margaret of Anjou. Still only seventeen, he had spent much of his life as the focus of Lancastrian efforts to recover the throne from Edward IV of York. After the Earl of Warwick was defeated and killed at Barnet, Edward and Margaret led the remaining Lancastrian forces to Tewkesbury.
The Lancastrian army was defeated, and Edward was killed during the retreat. Later Tudor accounts claimed he was captured and executed after being brought before Edward IV and his brothers, but contemporary evidence indicates that he died in or immediately after the battle. His death, followed soon afterward by Henry VI's murder in the Tower, effectively ended the direct Lancastrian line.
