Which battle in 1066 gave William the Conqueror control of England?
Answer
Battle of Hastings
Answer
Battle of Hastings
The Battle of Hastings in 1066 gave William the Conqueror control of England. The battle was fought on 14 October 1066 between William, Duke of Normandy, and the English army led by King Harold Godwinson.
William invaded England after claiming that Harold had broken an earlier promise supporting William’s succession to the English throne. Harold had just defeated a Norwegian invasion at Stamford Bridge in northern England, then marched south to confront William’s army near Hastings. The English used a shield wall on a ridge, while the Norman forces combined infantry, archers, and cavalry.
Harold was killed during the battle, although the famous Bayeux Tapestry scene showing an arrow in his eye is not certain evidence of how he died. William was crowned king at Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066. The Norman Conquest then transformed England’s ruling class, language, castles, landholding system, and government.
