Which battle followed George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River on December 25–26, 1776?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Trenton followed George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River on December 25–26, 1776.

Washington led Continental Army troops across the ice-filled river during a night operation planned to surprise the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey. The attack began before sunrise on December 26, and the Americans captured the town and many prisoners.

The maneuver came after a difficult period for the revolutionary army. British forces had driven Washington's army out of New York and across New Jersey, while enlistments were expiring and morale was low. The victory at Trenton gave the American cause a major psychological boost.

The famous crossing was the opening move of a larger operation. Washington later defeated British forces at Princeton in January 1777. Emanuel Leutze's enormous 1851 painting made the scene one of the best-known images of American history, although it includes artistic details rather than serving as a literal photograph of the event.
