Which battle became a major turning point that helped bring France into the American Revolutionary War?

The story behind the answer

The Battles of Saratoga became a major turning point that helped bring France into the American Revolutionary War.

The Saratoga campaign took place in New York in 1777 as British Lieutenant General John Burgoyne attempted to move south from Canada and split New England from the other American colonies. The campaign culminated in two major engagements: Freeman’s Farm on September 19 and Bemis Heights on October 7.

American forces under General Horatio Gates and other commanders forced Burgoyne’s army to surrender on October 17, 1777. News of the victory persuaded France that the American cause had a realistic chance of defeating Britain. France then formalized its support through the Franco-American treaties signed on February 6, 1778.

Saratoga is sometimes described as a single battle, but the name commonly refers to the paired engagements and the wider campaign. Yorktown was the later decisive siege that led to the end of major fighting, while Bunker Hill occurred earlier in 1775.
