Which baseball team won its third straight World Series title in 2000?

The story behind the answer

The New York Yankees won their third straight World Series title in 2000.

The Yankees defeated the New York Mets four games to one in the 2000 World Series, an all-New York matchup popularly known as the Subway Series. The championship followed New York’s victories over the San Diego Padres in 1998 and the Atlanta Braves in 1999, giving the Yankees three consecutive titles.

The 2000 championship was the Yankees’ 26th World Series title overall. It also made them the first Major League Baseball team to win three straight championships since the Oakland Athletics captured three in a row from 1972 through 1974. The Yankees’ late-1990s dynasty was built around stars including Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, and Andy Pettitte.

The series had extra local significance because the Mets and Yankees played in the same city. The Yankees won the decisive Game 5 at Shea Stadium, completing one of the most notable championship runs in modern baseball history. Mariano Rivera also became the first pitcher to record the final out in three consecutive World Series.
