Which bartender replaced Coach after Coach died off-screen?

Woody Boyd replaced Coach after Coach died off-screen on Cheers. The change followed the death of actor Nicholas Colasanto, who played the original bartender, Ernie “Coach” Pantusso.

Coach was one of the bar’s employees from the series premiere in 1982. Colasanto’s worsening heart condition prevented him from completing the third season, and he died at home on February 12, 1985. The show initially explained Coach’s absence by saying he was out of town.

The season-four premiere, “Birth, Death, Love and Rice,” addressed Coach’s death directly and introduced Woody Boyd, a young bartender from Indiana who had corresponded with Coach. Woody arrived expecting to meet his pen pal and instead learned that Coach had died.

Played by Woody Harrelson, Woody became a principal cast member for the show’s final eight seasons. Although he filled the open bartender position, his personality and background were distinct from Coach’s, allowing the series to acknowledge the loss while creating new comic relationships.
