Which Baroque painter was known as 'Il Guercino'?

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri was the Baroque painter known as Il Guercino.

Born in Cento in 1591, Barbieri became known by the nickname Guercino, a diminutive related to the Italian word for “squinter” or someone with a misaligned eye. He was largely self-taught in his youth and developed an early style marked by energetic naturalism, vivid movement, and luminous drawing.

Guercino’s two years in Rome, from 1621 to 1623, were especially important. He painted major works there, including the Aurora fresco at the Villa Ludovisi and the Saint Petronilla altarpiece. His Roman experience broadened his reputation and connected his art to the international development of the Baroque.

After returning to Cento, Guercino later moved to Bologna in 1642 following the death of Guido Reni. He took over much of Reni’s position as Bologna’s leading painter of sacred subjects, while his own manner became more classically balanced. Domenichino and Guido Reni were fellow Bolognese-associated artists, but neither used the nickname Il Guercino.
