Answer
Pietro da Cortona
Which Baroque artist is known for the ceiling fresco “The Triumph of Divine Providence”? Pietro da Cortona is the artist.
Cortona painted the monumental fresco, also called “Allegory of Divine Providence and Barberini Power,” on the ceiling of the grand salon in Rome’s Palazzo Barberini. Pope Urban VIII, whose family name was Barberini, commissioned the work in 1633, and Cortona completed it about six years later.
The composition celebrates divine providence and the power of the Barberini family through allegorical figures, personifications, and the family’s distinctive bee emblem. Cortona used illusionistic perspective, making the painted architecture appear to open into the sky. Figures seem to float above the viewer, a hallmark of the exuberant Roman Baroque.
The fresco is often confused with other famous Baroque ceilings. Annibale Carracci painted the “Loves of the Gods” in the Palazzo Farnese, while Giovanni Battista Gaulli created “The Triumph of the Name of Jesus” in the Church of the Gesù. Andrea Pozzo is associated with the illusionistic ceiling of Sant’Ignazio in Rome.
