Which Baroque architect designed the Basilica of Superga near Turin?

Filippo Juvarra designed the Basilica of Superga near Turin.

The hilltop basilica was commissioned by Victor Amadeus II, Duke of Savoy, after his forces defeated the French and Spanish besiegers at the Battle of Turin in 1706. The building fulfilled a vow he made to dedicate a monument to the Virgin Mary if Turin was relieved.

Construction began in 1717, and the church was completed and consecrated in 1731. Juvarra combined a classical temple front with a large Baroque dome; the composition reflects his experience in Rome, including his study of major monuments such as the Pantheon and St. Peter’s Basilica.

The basilica also serves as the burial place of many members of the House of Savoy. It is sometimes confused with Turin churches designed by Guarino Guarini or Francesco Borromini, but Superga is one of Juvarra’s defining architectural achievements.
