Answer
Plaça Reial
Which Barcelona square has street lamps designed by Gaudí? Plaça Reial has the famous Gaudí-designed street lamps.
The lamps were among Antoni Gaudí’s earliest commissions, created for Barcelona in 1878 and installed in the square in 1879. Two surviving six-armed lamps stand near the Fountain of the Three Graces. Their cast-iron bodies rest on marble bases and incorporate Barcelona’s coat of arms.
Their upper decoration is especially symbolic: two coiled serpents and a winged helmet form a version of Mercury’s caduceus, an emblem associated with commerce. That design suits Plaça Reial’s urban setting near La Rambla and the historic commercial centre.
A common mix-up is Pla de Palau, where Gaudí also designed related three-armed lamps. Those are another Barcelona commission, but the square most directly associated with the surviving six-armed lamps is Plaça Reial.
