Pantera’s 1994 album Far Beyond Driven debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Its chart success was a striking achievement for an exceptionally heavy record during an era dominated by alternative rock and grunge.
Released on March 22, 1994, Far Beyond Driven was Pantera’s seventh studio album and followed the commercially successful Vulgar Display of Power. The record pushed the band’s groove-metal sound toward an even harsher, more aggressive attack, driven by Dimebag Darrell’s guitar work, Phil Anselmo’s vocals, Rex Brown’s bass, and Vinnie Paul’s drumming.
The album’s singles included “I’m Broken” and “5 Minutes Alone.” It also closed with Pantera’s cover of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan,” which became one of the album’s notable contrasts: a spacious, atmospheric performance after an otherwise punishing collection of songs. Far Beyond Driven was later certified Platinum in the United States.
Megadeth, Slayer, and Metallica were all influential metal bands with major charting albums, but none is the answer to this specific chart question. Pantera’s number-one debut remains one of the landmark commercial breakthroughs for extreme metal.
