Foo Fighters won Best Rock Album at the 2001 Grammys for "There Is Nothing Left to Lose." The band's third studio album was released on November 2, 1999, and marked a significant change in its lineup and sound.
Recorded mainly in the basement of Dave Grohl's Virginia home, the album featured Grohl, bassist Nate Mendel, and drummer Taylor Hawkins. It was Hawkins's first studio album with Foo Fighters. Compared with the band's earlier work, the record leaned more heavily into melody and included a softer, more spacious production style, while still retaining its alternative-rock foundation.
The album's Grammy victory was especially important because it gave Foo Fighters their first Grammy Award. The band later won Best Rock Album again for "One by One" in 2004, as well as for several subsequent albums. Another frequent mix-up is the Grammy year: the album came out in 1999, but it won at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2001, which honored music from 2000.
