Which band is celebrated in the Broadway jukebox musical Ain’t Too Proud?

The Temptations are the band celebrated in the Broadway jukebox musical Ain’t Too Proud.

Ain’t Too Proud tells the story of the Motown vocal group’s formation, rise, internal conflicts, and changing lineup. The musical uses songs associated with The Temptations, including “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.”

The book was written by Dominique Morisseau, and the musical is based on Otis Williams’s memoir Temptations. Williams was a founding member and the group’s continuing member, giving the story a specific autobiographical perspective.

The title comes from “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” a Temptations hit. The show is sometimes mixed up with Motown: The Musical, which covers Berry Gordy and the broader Motown story. Ain’t Too Proud is specifically centered on The Temptations and their group history.
