Which band did Andy Warhol design the cover for in 1967’s The Velvet Underground & Nico?

The story behind the answer

Andy Warhol designed the cover for The Velvet Underground’s 1967 debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico.

The cover features a large yellow banana on a white background and originally invited some editions’ buyers to peel away the banana skin, revealing a pink fruit underneath. Warhol was credited as the album’s producer, although the band’s recordings were made with additional production and engineering work by figures including Tom Wilson.

The banana became one of the most recognizable images in rock-album history. Early copies with the peelable design required special manufacturing and were more expensive to produce, so later editions generally printed the banana without the interactive feature.

The album was released by Verve Records in March 1967. It is often called the “banana album,” but its official title is The Velvet Underground & Nico.
