Which Baltic country has Riga as its capital?

The story behind the answer

The Baltic country whose capital is Riga is Latvia.

Latvia is one of the three Baltic states, alongside Estonia to the north and Lithuania to the south. Riga, situated on the Gulf of Riga at the mouth of the Daugava River, is Latvia’s capital and largest city. It is also the second-largest city in the Baltic region after Vilnius.

Riga was founded in 1201 and became an important medieval trading centre. Its membership in the Hanseatic League connected it to a broad network of northern European ports. The city’s historic centre is especially famous for its Art Nouveau architecture, wooden buildings, and UNESCO World Heritage status.

The Baltic states are easy to confuse because they share a region and intertwined histories. Estonia’s capital is Tallinn, while Lithuania’s capital is Vilnius. Latvia restored its independence from the Soviet Union on 21 August 1991 and joined the European Union and NATO in 2004. Today, Latvian is the official language and the euro is the national currency.
