Which B-29 bomber dropped the Little Boy bomb on Hiroshima?

The story behind the answer

The B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped the Little Boy bomb on Hiroshima.

Enola Gay was a Boeing B-29 Superfortress assigned to the 509th Composite Group. Colonel Paul Tibbets piloted the aircraft during the mission on 6 August 1945, when it released Little Boy over Hiroshima at approximately 8:15 a.m. local time.

The aircraft was named after Tibbets’s mother, Enola Gay Tibbets. It departed from North Field on the Pacific island of Tinian, where the 509th Composite Group had been based for its special bombing missions.

Bockscar is the common mix-up because it dropped Fat Man on Nagasaki on 9 August. The Great Artiste accompanied the Hiroshima mission as an observation and instrument aircraft, while Necessary Evil photographed the attack. Enola Gay later became part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s collection.
