Which B-29 bomber dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki?

The story behind the answer

Bockscar was the B-29 bomber that dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki.

Bockscar took off from Tinian’s North Field on August 9, 1945, carrying the plutonium weapon. Major Charles W. Sweeney piloted the aircraft, with Captain Frederick Ashworth serving as the weaponeer responsible for the bomb.

The mission originally targeted Kokura, but clouds, smoke, limited fuel, and repeated bombing runs made a visual attack impossible. The crew diverted to Nagasaki, where a brief break in the clouds allowed the bomb to be dropped visually.

Bockscar is sometimes confused with Enola Gay, the B-29 that dropped Little Boy on Hiroshima three days earlier. The two aircraft belonged to the 509th Composite Group, but they carried different weapons and attacked different cities. Bockscar is preserved at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
