Bockscar was the B-29 bomber that dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945.
The aircraft was assigned to the 393rd Bombardment Squadron of the 509th Composite Group and was flown on the mission by Major Charles W. Sweeney. Its command pilot was Captain Frederick C. Bock, whose name inspired the aircraft’s nickname, often written as “Bock’s Car.”
Kokura was the primary target, but clouds and smoke obscured the aiming point. Bockscar therefore diverted to Nagasaki, where it released Fat Man at about 10:58 a.m. local time.
A frequent mix-up links Fat Man with Enola Gay, but Enola Gay carried Little Boy to Hiroshima three days earlier. Bockscar survived the mission and is now displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
