Which B-29 bomber dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima?
Answer
Enola Gay
Answer
Enola Gay
The B-29 bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima was Enola Gay.
Enola Gay carried the Little Boy bomb during the August 6, 1945 mission. Colonel Paul Tibbets piloted the aircraft, which belonged to the 393rd Bombardment Squadron of the 509th Composite Group. Tibbets named the bomber after his mother, Enola Gay Tibbets.
The aircraft departed from Tinian in the Mariana Islands, a major U.S. air base in the Pacific. It flew to Hiroshima, released the bomb at approximately 8:15 a.m. local time, and then turned sharply away to reduce the effects of the blast. The mission marked the first use of a nuclear weapon in combat.
Enola Gay is sometimes confused with Bockscar, the B-29 that dropped Fat Man on Nagasaki three days later. The aircraft later became an exhibit at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, where its display has remained associated with public debates about how to interpret the bombings.
