Which B-29 bomber dropped Fat Man on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945?
Answer
Bockscar
Answer
Bockscar
Bockscar dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.
The B-29 was piloted by Major Charles W. Sweeney of the 509th Composite Group. It departed Tinian carrying Fat Man, a plutonium implosion-type weapon. The primary target was Kokura, but cloud and smoke obscured the aiming point, so the crew proceeded to the secondary target, Nagasaki.
Fat Man was more powerful and technically complex than Little Boy, which Enola Gay had dropped on Hiroshima three days earlier. The Nagasaki mission was the second and final use of a nuclear weapon in warfare.
The aircraft’s name is often written as Bockscar or Bock’s Car. The name referred to Captain Frederick Bock, the aircraft’s regular commander, although Sweeney piloted it on the Nagasaki mission. Bockscar is preserved at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
