Which Aztec emperor was the father of Moctezuma II?
Answer
Axayacatl
Answer
Axayacatl
Axayacatl was the Aztec emperor and father of Moctezuma II. He ruled Tenochtitlan from 1469 until his death in 1481, succeeding Moctezuma I and preceding his brother Tizoc.
Axayacatl was a member of the ruling dynasty through his mother, Atotoztli II, and was also related to earlier emperors such as Moctezuma I and Itzcoatl. His reign was marked by military expansion, including the conquest of neighboring Tlatelolco in 1473 and campaigns in the Toluca Valley.
He is sometimes confused with Moctezuma I, who was Moctezuma II’s great-grandfather and Axayacatl’s predecessor. Axayacatl was also the father of Cuitlahuac, who briefly succeeded Moctezuma II during the Spanish invasion. The famous Aztec Sun Stone was created during Axayacatl’s reign, although its exact original purpose remains debated.
