Which aviation pioneer advised the Wright brothers during their early glider experiments?

The story behind the answer

Octave Chanute advised the Wright brothers during their early glider experiments. Chanute was an engineer and aviation researcher who corresponded with the brothers and shared information about previous flying-machine experiments.

In 1896, Chanute organized glider tests near Miller Beach, Indiana. His published work, Progress in Flying Machines, summarized earlier aviation research and became an important reference for people pursuing heavier-than-air flight.

The Wright brothers began corresponding with Chanute in 1900. He offered encouragement, discussed engineering ideas, and visited their camp during the 1901 glider tests. The brothers valued his experience, although they increasingly developed their own methods and conclusions.

Chanute did not invent the Wrights’ airplane or control system. The brothers’ distinctive contribution was integrating aerodynamic control, a practical engine, and a propeller system into a successful powered aircraft. Chanute’s role was that of an influential adviser and correspondent.
