Which automobile became the first car to cross the United States from coast to coast, in 1903?

The story behind the answer

A Winton touring car became the first automobile to cross the United States from coast to coast in 1903, driven by George A. Wyman.

Wyman left San Francisco in May 1903 and reached New York City in July after covering roughly 3,800 miles. The journey used a modified Winton motorcycle-derived touring automobile and required extensive repairs, route-finding, and travel over roads that were often little more than trails.

The trip demonstrated that long-distance motoring was possible before a dependable national highway network existed. Wyman also used rail transport for part of the journey after a mechanical failure, which is why accounts carefully distinguish his achievement from later uninterrupted drives.

The Thomas Flyer is linked to the famous 1908 New York-to-Paris race, not the first coast-to-coast American crossing. The Ford Model T appeared later, in 1908.
