McLaren launched the McLaren MP4/4, which won 15 of 16 races in the 1988 Formula One season.
The MP4/4 was driven by Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, who joined McLaren for the 1988 season. Senna won eight races and the drivers’ championship, while Prost won seven and finished second.
Powered by a Honda RA168E turbocharged V6, the car was designed by Gordon Murray, Steve Nichols, and Neil Oatley. Its low-line design worked with the final season of Formula One’s turbocharged engine regulations.
The only race the MP4/4 did not win was the 1988 Italian Grand Prix, where Ferrari took victory. McLaren’s season remains one of the most dominant in Formula One history, but the car’s record is sometimes incorrectly stated as a perfect 16 wins.
