Which automaker introduced the first production car with full LED headlights, the 2008 Audi R8?

The story behind the answer

Audi introduced the first production car with full LED headlights, the 2008 Audi R8.

The second-generation lighting technology appeared on the first-generation R8 as an optional full-LED headlamp system in 2008. Unlike earlier systems that used LEDs only for daytime running lights or auxiliary functions, the R8’s setup used light-emitting diodes for the main headlamp functions.

LEDs offered several advantages, including lower energy consumption, compact packaging and long service life. Their design flexibility also allowed manufacturers to create distinctive lighting signatures. Audi made lighting technology a prominent part of the R8’s identity and later expanded LED use across its model range.

The claim concerns a full-LED headlight system in a production car, not the first use of any LED anywhere on a vehicle. LEDs had already appeared in rear lamps, indicators and daytime running lights before the R8’s complete headlamp system.
