Ford introduced the first generation of the Mustang in 1964.
Ford unveiled the Mustang at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964. Although the company describes it as a 1965 model, early cars released before the usual model-year changeover are commonly called “1964½” Mustangs. The car was based on the compact Ford Falcon platform and offered numerous options so buyers could personalize price and performance.
The Mustang helped establish the pony-car class: relatively compact, sporty cars with long hoods and broad engine choices. Its launch was supported by an extensive advertising campaign and strong dealer demand. Ford sold more than 400,000 Mustangs during the first full year, far exceeding the company’s initial expectations.
