Oldsmobile built the Oldsmobile Curved Dash, often regarded as the first mass-produced automobile.
The Curved Dash was produced by the Olds Motor Vehicle Company from 1901 to 1907. It used a simple single-cylinder engine and a lightweight high-wheeled design that made it practical for the roads of the period.
Oldsmobile manufactured the car using production methods that allowed far more consistent output than the hand-built norm of the late nineteenth century. Approximately 19,000 were produced in 1903, making it one of the era’s most successful automobiles.
The Ford Model T later made moving-line mass production famous, but Ford did not build the first mass-produced car. The Curved Dash therefore occupies an important place in automotive manufacturing history before Ford’s larger-scale revolution.
