Tesla became the first automaker to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2021.
Tesla crossed the milestone in October 2021 after its share price surged following a major vehicle-order announcement. Investors valued the company not only as a car manufacturer but also for its electric-vehicle technology, batteries, charging network, and software ambitions.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and initially focused on proving that electric cars could compete with conventional vehicles. The Roadster was its first production car, followed by the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y.
Market capitalization reflects investors’ expectations as well as current sales. Tesla’s trillion-dollar valuation therefore did not mean it produced as many vehicles as the largest established automakers. It meant the market assigned unusually high future-growth expectations to the company.
