Gardner was an American lawyer and prolific author whose Perry Mason stories combined courtroom drama with detective fiction. The character first appeared in The Case of the Velvet Claws, published in 1933, as a criminal-defense attorney who investigates cases to prove his clients innocent.

Gardner’s legal experience shaped the novels, especially their attention to evidence, cross-examination, and trial strategy. Perry Mason was partly inspired by Earl Rogers, a celebrated Los Angeles defense attorney known for dramatic courtroom methods. Gardner also wrote under several pseudonyms, including A. A. Fair.

The books later inspired films, radio programs, and the famous CBS television series starring Raymond Burr. The television version helped make Mason synonymous with the surprise courtroom confession, although the original novels generally give equal weight to investigation and legal maneuvering.
