Which author wrote the 'Little House on the Prairie' series?

The story behind the answer

Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote the Little House on the Prairie series.

The books are semi-autobiographical children's novels based on Wilder's childhood and young adulthood in the American Midwest during the late nineteenth century. The first volume, Little House in the Big Woods, appeared in 1932, followed by Little House on the Prairie in 1935. The original eight books were published during Wilder's lifetime, from 1932 to 1943.

The series follows the Ingalls family as they move through places including Wisconsin, Kansas, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Farmer Boy is a notable change of focus: it tells about the childhood of Almanzo Wilder, who later became Laura's husband. The posthumously published The First Four Years is commonly counted as the ninth book.

A frequent mix-up comes from the television drama Little House on the Prairie, which aired from 1974 to 1983. That program was a loose adaptation of Wilder's books, not the source of them. Wilder's daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, also helped edit and shape the manuscripts, but Laura Ingalls Wilder is the credited author.
