Which author wrote the Holocaust memoir Night, first published in 1956?
Answer
Elie Wiesel
Answer
Elie Wiesel
Elie Wiesel wrote the Holocaust memoir Night, first published in 1956.
Night recounts Wiesel’s experiences as a Jewish teenager deported from Sighet, then in Romania, to Auschwitz and later Buchenwald. The memoir describes the destruction of his family, the brutality of the camps, and his struggle with faith and identity amid persecution.
The book first appeared in Yiddish in Buenos Aires in 1956 under a longer title. A shortened French edition followed in 1958, and the English translation was published in 1960. Wiesel later revised some details and presented the work as a literary memoir rather than a complete chronological history.
Night is sometimes confused with Primo Levi’s If This Is a Man or Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning. Those are also important Holocaust books, but neither was written by Wiesel. Wiesel received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.
