Which author wrote 'Charlotte's Web'?

The story behind the answer

E. B. White wrote Charlotte’s Web. The American author’s 1952 children’s novel tells the story of Wilbur, a young pig, and Charlotte, a barn spider who tries to save him from being slaughtered.

White published the book on October 15, 1952, through Harper & Brothers. Garth Williams illustrated the original edition, helping establish the gentle but distinctive visual world of the Zuckerman farm. White’s writing combines humor, precise observation, and an unusually direct treatment of friendship, change, and death.

The story was partly inspired by White’s experiences on his farm in Maine. He observed a spider and became interested in the details of spider biology, including the way young spiders disperse on strands of silk. Charlotte’s full fictional name, Charlotte A. Cavatica, reflects the barn spider Araneus cavaticus.

Charlotte’s Web is sometimes confused with books by Beatrix Potter or Dr. Seuss because all are staples of children’s literature. White also wrote Stuart Little and The Trumpet of the Swan. Charlotte’s Web received a Newbery Honor in 1953.
