Which author won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Old Man and the Sea?

The story behind the answer

Ernest Hemingway won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Old Man and the Sea.

Published in 1952, the novella follows Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who has gone 84 days without catching a fish. On the next outing, he hooks a gigantic marlin and struggles for days to bring it to shore.

The story is set near Havana and focuses on endurance, dignity, skill, and the relationship between human beings and the natural world. Santiago's young friend Manolin supports him, even though the boy's parents have directed him to fish with another boat after Santiago's long run of bad luck.

The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953. It helped restore Hemingway's literary reputation after a period of critical disagreement. Hemingway received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954, and the Nobel citation specifically recognized his mastery of the art of narrative demonstrated in this work.
