Which author won the 1923 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for One of Ours?
Answer
Willa Cather
Answer
Willa Cather
Willa Cather won the 1923 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for One of Ours.
Published in 1922, One of Ours follows Claude Wheeler, a Nebraska farmer who becomes disillusioned with his life and eventually serves as an American soldier during World War I. Cather based parts of the wartime material on the experiences of her cousin G. P. Cather, who was killed in France.
The novel is divided between rural Nebraska and the Western Front. Its first half focuses on Claude’s family, education, marriage, and dissatisfaction; its second half shifts toward the idealism and violence of wartime service. The contrast is central to the book’s emotional structure.
One of Ours is sometimes confused with Cather’s earlier prairie novels, especially My Ántonia, but they are separate works. Cather received the Pulitzer for the 1922 novel in 1923, illustrating the prize’s usual one-year gap between publication and award.
