Which Austrian city is the main setting of The Sound of Music?
Answer
Salzburg
Answer
Salzburg
Salzburg is the main Austrian setting of The Sound of Music. The 1965 musical follows Maria, the von Trapp family, and their lives in and around Salzburg before the family leaves Austria in 1938.
The city’s historic buildings, gardens, churches, lakes, and surrounding Alpine scenery are central to the film’s visual identity. Several famous locations are in or near Salzburg, including Mirabell Gardens, Schloss Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn Palace, and Nonnberg Abbey. The opening mountain sequence features the Untersberg massif, which lies near the Austrian-German border.
The film is based loosely on the real von Trapp family, although Hollywood changed names, chronology, relationships, and other details. The family did leave Austria after the Anschluss, but their actual escape was less dramatic than the film’s border-crossing sequence. The movie also suggests a close connection to Salzburg’s landmarks even when some scenes were filmed elsewhere.
Salzburg became strongly associated with the film after its international success. Guided tours now visit many of the locations used for the von Trapp home, Maria’s arrival, and the family’s musical numbers.
