Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol in western Austria, set in the Inn Valley and surrounded by the Alps. It hosted the Winter Olympics first in 1964, from January 29 to February 9, and then again in 1976, from February 4 to 15. This made it the first city to host the Winter Games twice.

The 1976 Games came to Innsbruck after Denver, the original host city, withdrew following a Colorado referendum. The International Olympic Committee selected Innsbruck because it already had Olympic facilities and had organized the 1964 Games successfully. Many venues were reused or adapted for the second event.

The two Games also became associated with snow shortages. In 1964, Austrian soldiers transported tens of thousands of cubic metres of snow and large blocks of ice to the courses and sliding tracks. Innsbruck's Olympic history continued after 1976: the city hosted the first Winter Youth Olympics in 2012, using several established venues.
