Which Austrian bank’s failure helped trigger the European banking crisis of 1931?

The story behind the answer

Creditanstalt’s failure helped trigger the European banking crisis of 1931.

Creditanstalt was Austria’s largest bank when it announced insolvency in May 1931. The bank had accumulated substantial losses, and the disclosure damaged confidence in Austria’s financial system. Emergency support could not immediately restore trust, leading depositors and investors to seek safer assets.

The crisis spread beyond Austria through financial connections and fears about other banks’ solvency. Germany experienced a severe banking emergency later in 1931, while international lending and trade were also affected. The episode intensified the economic hardship associated with the Great Depression.

Creditanstalt is sometimes described as having “collapsed,” although the institution was reorganized and continued operating under government influence. It should also be distinguished from the later postwar Austrian bank created under a similar name. The 1931 event concerns the original Creditanstalt and its insolvency announcement.
