Which Australian water polo player was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2017?

The story behind the answer

Bridgette Gusterson was the Australian water polo player inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2017.

Gusterson was one of Australia's leading water polo players during the sport's formative international era for women. She represented Australia in four World Cups and two world championships, and became the first Australian woman to receive a professional water polo contract in Europe. She played for the Italian club Orizzonte from 1995 to 1997.

Her defining achievement came at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where women's water polo made its Olympic debut. Gusterson captained Australia to the gold medal, assisting the winning goal against the United States with just 1.3 seconds remaining. She was also Australia's leading scorer at the tournament.

A common mix-up is confusing her 2017 international induction with her induction into the Water Polo Australia Hall of Fame, which occurred in 2010. She later received the Medal of the Order of Australia for her contribution to sport.
