Bells Beach is the Australian surf break famous for hosting the Rip Curl Pro.
Bells Beach is on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, near Torquay. Its powerful right-hand point-break waves wrap around sandstone reefs and headlands, producing long walls when swell and wind conditions align.
The professional contest began as the Bells Beach Easter Classic in 1961 and later became the Rip Curl Pro. It is one of the longest-running events in professional surfing. The contest traditionally takes place around Easter, although the exact competition window varies with the World Surf League calendar and weather conditions.
The event’s distinctive trophy is shaped like a bell, reflecting the venue’s name. Bells Beach is not the same location as Sydney’s Bondi Beach or Queensland’s Snapper Rocks, both also associated with Australian surfing. Its combination of history, challenging reef-bottom waves, and the iconic trophy has made it one of the best-known venues in the sport.
