Which Australian general signed Japan's Instrument of Surrender in Tokyo Bay?

The story behind the answer

General Sir Thomas Blamey signed Japan's Instrument of Surrender for Australia in Tokyo Bay.

Blamey was the senior Australian Army officer and commander in chief of the Australian Military Forces during the final years of World War II. He signed aboard USS Missouri on September 2, 1945, after representatives of the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union.

Australia had pressed for a separate place at the ceremony rather than being represented only through the United Kingdom. Blamey’s signature therefore recorded Australia’s independent participation among the Allied governments.

The ceremony included nine Allied signatories in addition to General MacArthur, who signed for the Allied command. Blamey signed at approximately 9:17 a.m. Japan Standard Time, several minutes before the proceedings concluded.
