Sydney is the Australian city whose harbour hosts a famous New Year’s Eve fireworks display.
The celebration centres on Sydney Harbour, with fireworks launched from and around landmarks including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. The harbour setting makes the display especially recognisable: illuminated boats, waterfront crowds and the bridge’s changing pyrotechnic designs form the event’s signature skyline.
Sydney’s celebration is internationally prominent partly because Australia reaches midnight earlier than many major English-speaking countries. Its broadcast therefore often appears among the first major New Year’s Eve celebrations seen around the world. The display normally includes an earlier family fireworks show as well as the midnight event.
A common mix-up is to treat the fireworks as a celebration held in Melbourne or Brisbane. Those cities host their own New Year’s events, but the famous harbour spectacle associated with Australia is Sydney’s. The event is also distinct from Australia Day fireworks, which are held on January 26.
