Cairns is the main Australian gateway to the northern Great Barrier Reef.
The Queensland city lies on the tropical northeast coast beside the Coral Sea. Its airport, marina, tour industry, and nearby accommodation make it a major departure point for trips to offshore reefs and islands. Visitors commonly travel from Cairns by boat, catamaran, or scenic aircraft.
Cairns is not located on the outer reef itself. The city sits on the mainland, separated from many reef sites by coastal waters and the continental shelf. This distinction matters because the Great Barrier Reef is an offshore marine ecosystem rather than a feature immediately bordering the city centre.
Other Queensland towns, including Townsville, Port Douglas, and Airlie Beach, also provide access to different sections of the reef. Cairns is especially associated with the northern sector and is one of the best-known tourism hubs for reef excursions.
