Which Australian bird is renowned for its exceptional vocal mimicry?

The story behind the answer

The Australian bird renowned for exceptional vocal mimicry is the superb lyrebird.

Native to southeastern Australia, the superb lyrebird is a ground-dwelling songbird famous for combining its own calls with remarkably accurate imitations. Males may reproduce the songs of several local bird species, the sound of a flock, and occasionally noises such as chainsaws, camera shutters, or car alarms.

Mimicry is especially important during the male's elaborate courtship display. He sings while fanning his ornate tail, dancing on a mound, and producing an acoustic imitation of a mobbing flock. Researchers estimate that roughly 70–80% of a male's vocalizations may consist of imitations, although the exact repertoire varies between populations.

A common mix-up is assuming only males mimic sounds. Females also produce complex vocalizations, particularly while foraging and defending nests. The superb lyrebird is one of two lyrebird species; the other is the much rarer Albert's lyrebird, whose range and mimicked repertoire are more limited.
