Which Australian beach hosts the annual Rip Curl Pro surfing competition?

The story behind the answer

Bells Beach hosts the annual Rip Curl Pro surfing competition.

Bells Beach is on Victoria’s Surf Coast, near Torquay, Australia. The event is one of the longest-running contests on the professional surfing calendar and is traditionally associated with the Easter period. Its powerful right-hand point-break waves are especially suited to drawn-out turns and rail surfing.

The competition was originally known as the Bells Beach Surf Classic and later became the Rip Curl Pro. It is part of the World Surf League’s top-level Championship Tour when included in the annual schedule.

The location is sometimes confused with Snapper Rocks, which has hosted the Gold Coast’s major professional event, or Manly Beach, the site of the first world championship in 1964. Bells Beach is also famous for the tradition of ringing a bell when a competitor wins the event.
