Auckland’s Sky Tower is illuminated by New Year’s Eve fireworks each year.
The tower is a central landmark in Auckland’s midnight celebrations, with fireworks launched from its upper structure and a public countdown watched across the city. The display is timed for New Zealand’s local midnight, making it one of the prominent early major-city celebrations of the new year.
Sky Tower opened in 1997 and rises 328 meters above central Auckland. It is the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere. The landmark is sometimes confused with Auckland Harbour Bridge, which is also associated with city events, but the New Year’s fireworks are identified with Sky Tower.
